Bb Chord Guitar – Alternative Fingering

the above chord can also be played with the fingering shown below. The fourth finger is used to play the notes on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings. It's a bit harder this way at first, but some guitarists find it easier to play once they're used to it.

If you play it this way the 1st string note (the F played on the top E string) is optional.

This Bb chord is based on the open position E chord: it's the same shape, but played with a barre at the 6th fret.

What is a Bb chord? Is a Bb chord the same as a Bb major chord?

A Bb chord symbol in a piece of music means play a Bb major chord.

If asked to play a Bb chord guitarists know to play a Bb major chord, rather than a Bb minor, or Bb seventh, or any other kind of Bb chord.

Notes In a Bb Major Chord

Bb major chords are made up of 3 notes: Bb, D and F.

  • These notes can be played in any order in the chord (although they are usually arranged within the chord with a Bb as the lowest note).
  • The notes can be repeated in different octaves within the chord.

This is why there is always more than one way to play a chord on the guitar.

Movable Chord Shapes

The two barre chord shapes on this page can be used to play other major chords. You could play either of them two frets higher to play a C chord.

Chord shapes such as these are known as 'movable' chord shapes.
